The Arc Mercer, in conjunction with Institute for the Arts, has created a wonderful and dynamic drama club featuring actors with developmental disabilities. Classes are being held every Thursday evening between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at our newest enclave location on Young’s Road. Currently there are 12 official members, with about five more actors who come along to watch and join in the activities. Some of our staff have even decided to help in an official capacity after witnessing all the excitement that takes places during our meetings.

Our drama class covers an array of topics that assist the actors in understanding the primary ins and outs of what it takes to perform in a theater. We have dance parties, warm-up activities, and theater games, followed by both individual and group work. Actors are taught about stage direction and presence as well as how to tell a story in completion. These are key elements for any ensemble attempting to relay their message to an audience clearly and concisely.

Aside from the lessons, all who have been participating are having a fantastic time. The idea of being able to express oneself freely and openly has proven to be a great attraction for people who are sometimes reserved in a mixed environment. And with the huge number of staff participation and volunteers, our showcase will be truly integrated, showing representations of all individuals within our community.

The group is creating a soap opera for our next theater presentation. We have yet to come up with an official title but this is absolutely going to be one of our most interesting and creative programs to date. The show will be held at the Lawrenceville School on June 2nd between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in their Kirby Arts Center. There will also be a showcase from both our Music and Art programs. Please check our website and social media pages, as we will be updating them with more information as the date gets closer.

Hope to see you all there!!! This is going to be a good one!
