The Arc Mercer proudly hosted its annual Nigerian Flag Day celebration, honoring Nigeria’s Independence and highlighting the invaluable contributions of our Nigerian staff. Organized by our Team Atmosphere Committee (TAC), this event brought together members of the Arc Mercer family, special guests, and the broader community in an inspiring display of cultural unity and recognition. TAC's commitment to fostering a culturally connected and inclusive environment has once again brought diverse voices to the forefront, inspiring conversations about building a brighter future for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Held on Monday, October 21, at the Arc Mercer headquarters in Ewing, NJ, the celebration showcased how our frontline staff, through TAC, harness their passion and purpose to drive impactful change, not only in our agency but also beyond its borders.
Welcoming and Acknowledgments
The day began with opening remarks from Steve Cook, Executive Director of the Arc Mercer, followed by a blessing from Special Apostle John Sanya Adejuyigbe [J.P] from the Pentecostal Power Platform. Cook introduced board members and dignitaries, including Arc board president Rick Koreyva, who spoke on the tremendous value the Nigerian staff bring to the agency. Trenton’s Director of Public Works, Wahab “Wally” Onitiri, echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the dedication of Arc Mercer's Nigerian community to their roles and the people they serve.
The Honor Guard, led by Oluwaseun Adejola, and supported by Adegbenga Adewole, Olubukola Adekoya, Cynthia Chukwu, Chigozie Anene, Olumide Ajayi, and Calistus Madu, raised the Nigerian flag in a moving tribute to Nigeria’s legacy after the playing of both the American and Nigerian National Anthems.
Executive Director Steve Cook highlighted a remarkable moment to the crowd: as the Nigerian flag was about to be raised, a sudden gust of wind swept through—perfectly timed to make the flag billow high. He noted how, at the Arc Mercer, the wind always seems to rise at just the right moment during flag raisings, as though a greater force is watching over and guiding the agency’s mission forward.
Keynote Address and Vision for the Future
A highlight of the event was a keynote address by Dr. Adeola Popoola, President of the New Jersey Chapter of the Nigeria in Diaspora Organization (NIDO). A prominent figure in the field of physical therapy and medical rehabilitation, Dr. Popoola brought over 50 years of experience to his address, inspiring attendees with stories of advocacy, education, and career development. Dr. Popoola’s distinguished career includes influential roles at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and the University of Lagos, along with leadership positions in professional organizations dedicated to advancing healthcare in Nigeria.
In his address, Dr. Popoola shared insights into building sustainable programs to support Nigerians with IDD. His words resonated deeply with our Nigerian staff, as he emphasized the importance of initiatives like Project 601, the Arc Mercer’s ongoing effort to establish special needs support programs in Liberia, and its planned expansion into Sierra Leone with Project 602. Dr. Popoola encouraged the Arc Mercer to consider a similar initiative in Nigeria, sparking discussions for a potential "Project 603." He prompted the TAC’s Nigerian team members to collaborate on a strategic plan with Executive Director Steve Cook, setting the stage for potential future international partnerships.
A Celebration of Culture and Community
The day concluded with a closing prayer from Pastor Samuel Ayeni from the Nigeria Faith-Based Community Organization of New Jersey and delicious spread of authentic Nigerian cuisine. Everyone in attendance came together over traditional foods and shared in the joy of the celebration. Attendees left not only with a sense of pride and connection but with renewed excitement for what’s possible when we embrace our diverse backgrounds and work together toward shared goals.
At the Arc Mercer, we are proud of the dedicated staff members who continually bring our mission to life, both locally and abroad. Our TAC members exemplify this commitment, translating their passion for service into action that uplifts, connects, and empowers our entire community. Nigerian Flag Day was more than just a celebration—it was a testament to our vision of creating a supportive and inclusive world for all
Team Atmosphere Committee (TAC): The Heart of Cultural and Structural Change
The Team Atmosphere Committee is an essential part of the Arc Mercer, composed of our dedicated frontline heroes who bring invaluable perspectives to the table. Through Advisory Work Groups, TAC members meet monthly to address and influence agency policy, ensuring that those directly serving our consumers have a voice in shaping our agency’s future. Meanwhile, TAC’s Cultural Connections programs, including events like Nigerian Flag Day, promote diversity, inclusion, and cultural understanding by celebrating the many backgrounds that make up the Arc Mercer community.
This year’s Nigerian Flag Day celebration exemplifies TAC’s mission to drive meaningful change and foster a sense of belonging. By creating opportunities for staff to showcase their heritage and collaborate on international projects, TAC’s work extends beyond individual celebrations to inspire community-wide unity and engagement.
