Arc Mercer Celebrates Warm Welcome from Windswept Drive Community

Arc Mercer is delighted to announce the opening of its newest group home on Windswept Drive in Robbinsville, NJ. In line with our mission to foster strong community relationships and integrate individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) into society, we recently hosted a meet-and-greet event to introduce ourselves to our new neighbors. 

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with approximately 20 residents attending to learn more about our organization and the individuals we support.​

During the gathering, our residential department provided insights into Arc Mercer's dedication to empowering individuals with IDD through opportunity, engagement, and support. We addressed common misconceptions and emphasized the importance of inclusion and understanding. 

It's well-documented that individuals with IDD often face societal stigma, leading to challenges such as social exclusion and limited opportunities. These negative perceptions can result in isolation and diminished quality of life. 

The warm and inclusive reception from the Windswept Drive community stands in stark contrast to these challenges. Neighbors extended heartfelt welcomes, offering housewarming gifts like plants and cookies. Children crafted thoughtful cards with messages such as "Welcome Home!" and "Welcome to the neighborhood, I love new people because then I get new friends."​

One neighbor expressed their enthusiasm, stating, "​Welcome to the neighborhood! When we heard what the construction was for, we were overjoyed... Our family looks forward to getting to know you guys."​

Building a sense of community is vital for our residents, who deeply desire to be active and valued members of their neighborhoods. The acceptance and kindness demonstrated by the Windswept Drive community not only enhance the well-being of our residents but also serve as a powerful example of how societal barriers can be dismantled through empathy and connection. 

We extend our sincere gratitude to all the generous neighbors who took the time to welcome us, whether by attending the event or sending thoughtful gifts.
