Arc Mercer Day Program Consumers Visit Unicorn Therapeutic Riding

The Arc Mercer’s Day Program recently provided a unique and enriching experience for its consumers, thanks to a partnership with Unicorn Therapeutic Riding. Organized under the Day Program's Pet Care Committee, this visit highlighted the agency’s commitment to delivering innovative and high-quality activities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Fifteen participants from the Campus Day Program enjoyed a hands-on opportunity to interact with horses and learn about their care. The group was divided into three smaller teams to ensure everyone could participate in each activity. Rotating through stations, the consumers learned how to lead horses, brush them, and observe the fascinating process of shoeing a horse by a mobile farrier.

This outing was more than just a fun day at the farm. It was a chance for consumers to develop new skills, bond with animals, and engage with the local community in a meaningful way. Activities like these support the Arc Mercer’s mission of fostering personal growth and inclusion while helping consumers discover new interests and talents.

The Pet Care Committee, one of the innovative subcommittees within the Arc Mercer’s Day Program, plays a critical role in identifying opportunities like this. Comprised of mission-driven staff, the committee develops curricula centered on animal care, partnering with experts to create engaging and educational experiences. The recent visit to Unicorn Therapeutic Riding is just one example of their efforts.

Expanding Day Program Horizons

The Arc Mercer has established itself as a leader in IDD services by continually seeking out innovative ways to enrich the lives of those it serves. Beyond pet care, the agency is broadening its horizons by integrating specialized programs into its Day Program offerings. Consumers can explore interests in TV production, STEM, horticulture, art, and more—each designed to provide high-quality, engaging experiences that build skills, boost confidence, and encourage creativity.

A Community Impact

This visit to Unicorn Therapeutic Riding not only left a lasting impression on the consumers but also strengthened the relationship between the Arc Mercer and the local community. Events like these illustrate the agency’s dedication to creating inclusive and impactful opportunities for individuals with IDD.
