Arc Mercer's Dual Diagnosis Program Explores History at the National Guard Militia Museum of NJ

Recently, the Arc Mercer’s Dual Diagnosis Program had the opportunity to step outside the usual setting and dive into New Jersey's rich military history. The program participants visited the National Guard Militia Museum of New Jersey (NGMMNJ), which houses an incredible collection of artifacts showcasing the role of New Jersey’s citizen-soldiers throughout history. Located at both the National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt and the National Guard Armory in Lawrenceville, the museum provided a unique and engaging experience for all who attended.

A Day of Learning and Exploration

For many of our participants, this visit was not only a chance to learn about military history but also an important community experience. The museum’s displays, including uniforms, weapons, photographs, and artifacts, spanned from the early colonization period through the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and both World Wars. Through these exhibits, participants learned about the diverse contributions of the New Jersey citizen-soldier to the state and the nation.

Special attention was paid to making the experience meaningful and accessible to everyone. Participants explored the museum’s historical exhibits at their own pace, engaging with stories that reflect resilience, service, and the enduring spirit of New Jersey’s soldiers.

Community Outings that Support Wellness

For individuals in the Dual Diagnosis Program—many of whom face both intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and mental health challenges—outings like this one offer more than just a break from routine. They provide meaningful opportunities for social interaction, learning, and community engagement. By experiencing history in an immersive environment, participants were able to connect with the broader world, which is a key component of overall wellness in the dual diagnosis approach.

A Day to Remember

The visit to the National Guard Militia Museum was a memorable day that blended education, fun, and personal growth. It’s experiences like this that enrich the lives of those we serve, fostering a sense of connection to the past, the present, and the community.

We are grateful to the NGMMNJ, Inc. and their volunteers for making this visit possible. Their dedication to preserving and sharing New Jersey's military history provided our participants with an unforgettable experience.

At the Arc Mercer, we strive to create opportunities that support not only the intellectual and developmental needs of our participants but also their mental, emotional, and social well-being. This outing is just one of the many ways we continue to enhance the lives of those in our care through meaningful community engagement.
