At Arc Mercer, our Dual Diagnosis program serves individuals with both intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) and mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. We are proud to provide enriching experiences that empower our consumers and help them engage with the community in meaningful ways. One such initiative is our collaboration with the Mercer County Wildlife Center.
Typically, one staff member and one consumer from our program volunteer every Monday at the Wildlife Center, helping care for sick and injured wildlife. However, when the center needed a group of volunteers to assist with removing invasive weeds like mugwort from their outdoor exhibits, the Arc Mercer Dual Diagnosis team eagerly stepped up.
On a particularly hot Thursday morning, our team arrived and spent several hours working hard to pull weeds by hand, helping to restore the habitat for the native wildlife. The effort was both challenging and rewarding, showing the commitment and community spirit of our Dual Diagnosis program members.
The Mercer County Wildlife Center, owned by Mercer County and operated by the Mercer County Park Commission with support from Wildlife Center Friends, is a state and federally licensed facility that provides free care for injured, ill, and displaced native wildlife. Open 365 days a year, the center is directed by a licensed, full-time wildlife rehabilitator and supported by a small team of employees and over 70 dedicated volunteers and interns. It offers a fantastic opportunity for our consumers to learn, grow, and give back to the community.
