Innovative Emergency Training Elevates Staff Readiness at the Arc Mercer

The Arc Mercer continues to raise the bar in staff training through innovative collaborations between the Quality Assurance, Behavior, and Training departments. One of the latest initiatives is the development of comprehensive “Fire Drill” emergency simulations—an engaging and educational series designed to test and improve emergency response skills.

These simulations do not involve actual consumers but instead rely on actors from the Training Department to create realistic scenarios. This approach allows staff to practice essential skills in high-stress environments without risking consumer safety.

A Chaotic Scene in the Arcade

The first drill, launched a few months ago, simulated a situation where a consumer attempted to elope during a chaotic incident in the high-traffic arcade area at the main building. With loud noises, distractions, and numerous people passing through, the environment was intentionally challenging. Staff had to de-escalate the situation while remaining vigilant over other consumers under their care.

Thanks to their training and innate dedication, staff performed exceptionally well. The drill provided valuable lessons, reinforcing the importance of composure, communication, and situational awareness in managing high-pressure situations.

Life-Saving Lessons at a Residential Site

More recently, the Arc Mercer conducted its second drill at a residential location, presenting staff with a scenario that emphasized swift thinking and compassionate care. The exercise began with a staff member inspecting an agency transportation vehicle, only to find a simulated consumer left inside, unconscious.

Each staff member encountered a unique twist in the scenario: some faced a 90-degree heat simulation with signs of heat-related illness, while others dealt with freezing temperatures and symptoms of hypothermia.

The guiding principle for the drill was “Check, Call, Care,” highlighting the importance of assessing the situation, contacting emergency services, and providing immediate care. Staff demonstrated not only their mastery of emergency procedures but also extraordinary compassion—offering jackets or creatively finding ways to warm or cool down the simulated consumer as needed.

Raising the Standard of Care

These exercises underscored the Arc Mercer’s commitment to fostering a culture where staff treat consumers with the same care and attention they would give to their own family members. This mindset, combined with rigorous training, sets the agency apart in the industry.

The Fire Drill simulations have proven to be an invaluable learning experience, preparing staff to respond confidently and compassionately to real-world emergencies. The Arc Mercer looks forward to continuing these innovative training programs, ensuring that staff remain well-equipped to handle any situation that arises.
