The Arc Mercer always puts the well-being of its consumers first. Many of them need regular podiatry care, but having appointments during program hours was disrupting their routines. Missing their usual activities was stressful and frustrating.
To address this, the residential team worked with a trusted podiatrist who had been providing care to many of our consumers already. He collaborated with the team to set aside dedicated time on certain days to see them in larger groups after program hours. This allows consumers to attend their programs as usual while still receiving the care they need. Staff members accompany them every step of the way to provide support.
Routines are important for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities because they provide structure and reduce anxiety. By making this change, The Arc Mercer is ensuring that consumers receive essential medical care without disrupting their daily lives.
