The Arc Mercer’s Special Needs Alliance for Pride (SNAP)/LGBTQ+ Group, a cultural connection group within the agency’s Team Atmosphere Committee, held a groundbreaking meeting focused on advocacy, education, and empowerment for the LGBTQ+ and special needs communities.
Shannon Welsh and Mary Ziminski, representatives from PRISM, The College of New Jersey’s (TCNJ) oldest gender and sexuality alliance, and Chelsea Rondinaro, a representative from Hyacinth, a New Jersey-based organization dedicated to HIV education and support, joined the SNAP group to foster a meaningful dialogue. Together, they explored critical topics such as:
The aims and objectives of SNAP
What it means to identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community
Self-identity, diversity, and inclusion
One of the most moving moments of the meeting came from Ryan Anthony Burton, an Arc Mercer consumer, whose insightful and eloquent contributions resonated deeply with everyone in attendance. Their perspective on identity and the importance of avoiding pressure to self-identify sparked a thoughtful discussion about acceptance and individuality.
Advocacy and Allyship
A key takeaway from the meeting was the vital role allies play in advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. The group discussed the challenges of confronting discrimination and emphasized the importance of education as a tool to foster understanding. As one participant noted, "People fear what they don’t understand."
The SNAP/LGBTQ+ group remains a safe space for open discussion and questions, reinforcing its mission to support all members of the Arc Mercer community.

The collaboration with PRISM and Hyacinth offered invaluable insights into strategies for outreach, advocacy, and support. From fostering inclusivity to developing new initiatives, the SNAP group gained tools and ideas to advance its mission of raising awareness and promoting acceptance.
